Character Name: Christopher Pike
Character Canon: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Canon Point: After Subspace Rhapsody, before Hegemony. (It ends on a rough cliffhanger I don’t want to deal with.)
Age: ~50
Crime: Aiding and abetting acts of interplanetary trafficking, torture and ritual sacrifice against a child under the age of 10.
(This is technically true, but he had no idea he was doing it. Pike helped secure the "safe" return of a child he understood to be a religious/cultural figure to a planet they visited, believing the child had been kidnapped by political dissidents who intended to harm him. In fact, the child was taken by his father, who was trying to save him from being used to operate a horrifying orphan-crushing machine that somehow keeps the rest of the planet alive and flourishing. Chris tried to stop it when he realized what was happening, but at that point, there was nothing he could do without killing the child and potentially destroying the planet. He regrets his involvement and feels particularly gross about the whole thing because he had a brief romantic relationship with the leader of the planet.)
Background: Wiki Link
Personality: Christopher Pike grew up in Mojave, California, the son of two school teachers who instilled in him a passion for learning. Always a bit of an over-achiever, Pike spent his childhood earning just about every boy scout badge on the books. In a lot of ways, Chris has lived his entire life in accordance with the Scout Oath and Scout Law (updated in 2187):
Scout Oath
Scout Law
All in all, Pike is a good man, but he’s not without flaws. Chris believes in service, sacrifice and compassion above all else, and that sometimes comes at a cost. He often deprioritizes his own needs (and his own safety) to a degree that could be considered reckless and irresponsible, especially now that he knows how he’s going to die. There have been several times that Pike has taken or tried to take an unnecessary risk to his own wellbeing because he’s confident that this isn’t how his story ends. Pike also tends to blame himself for things that aren’t his fault, holding onto every loss of life that occurs under his command.
While he is emotionally intelligent and often emotionally available to others, he struggles with genuine vulnerability. He usually gets away with this by asking people questions about themselves and sharing fun little anecdotes, which keeps them from noticing how curated the Pike they're getting really is. He only shares his deeper self with the few who've managed to sneak past his defenses - like Una, who has done it intentionally, and Spock, who has probably done it on accident. For this reason, he’s not great at romantic relationships.
Chris tries to see the good in people. This is usually beneficial (it gives fundamentally good people opportunities to live up to the faith he puts in them). But sometimes, he ends up being blindsided by something a more cynical person would have foreseen. Which is how he accidentally starts wars with the Romulans or inadvertently participates in what essentially amounts to a crime against humanity.
Pike also sucks at work life balance. Everyone he loves (who isn’t a horse) is someone he currently works with or has previously worked with, and he doesn’t really try to branch out beyond that. Granted, it would be hard with the life of a Starship captain. But Chris hasn’t made much on an effort to put down roots since he moved out at 18.
Abilities: He is a Starfleet Captain, and was the youngest ever Starfleet Captain, at 38, (until Kirk came along and became a Captain at 33). He has a lot of military experience, is a skilled tactician and strategist, an accomplished horseback rider, an excellent chef, and he can tie, like, 35 different kinds of knots. (Also, Mojave Junior Rodeo Champ 2218.)
Terrible at Astrophysics, though. It’s the only subject he failed in the academy. Chris is just not a math/science guy. That is Spock's job, and he is more than happy to let Spock do it.
Inventory: Starfleet uniform, work boots, insignia badge, phaser, communicator, data pad, wireless multi charger, watch that once belonged to his father, small bottle of Saurian brandy that was intended to be a gift, his lucky horseshoe cufflinks.

Scout Oath
On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to the Federation and my planet and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
Scout Law
A Scout is:
TRUSTWORTHY. Tell the truth and keep promises. People can depend on you. The way Chris captains his ship is very similar to how he'd run a boy scout troop. He sees himself as the leader, and he is, but mentorship is also an important aspect of how he relates to his crew. He wants everyone on his ship to trust him, trust his decisions and know that he'll always do everything he can to keep them safe. His crew depends on him, and he wants them to do so with confidence, and not fear. He takes this very seriously and often goes out of his way to understand the individual needs of his bridge crew, and do what he can to help them succeed.
LOYAL. Show that you care about your family, friends, Scout leaders, school, and planet. While Chris is not exactly a 'company man' in terms of following all the rules and regulations of the Federation at all times, he does put a lot of faith in the principles of the Federation and doesn't take it lightly when he goes against orders. He puts the preservation of life and happiness above the rules as they're written in a book, and will bend or break regulation if he thinks doing so is ultimately in the best interest of others. Chris's loyalty is first and foremost to his crew and his friends: he cares deeply about the people he surrounds himself with and would do anything for them.
HELPFUL. Volunteer to help others without expecting a reward. Whether it's making someone breakfast, or risking his own life to save someone else's, Chris shows his compassion for his friends, family, and frankly - everyone, through acts of service. He wants to be useful, and he is driven to do things for others that make their lives better. He truly finds joy in mentorship, problem-solving, and making a positive difference.
FRIENDLY & CHEERFUL. Be a friend to everyone, even people who are very different from you. Look for the bright side of life. Cheerfully do tasks that come your way. Try to help others be happy. Obviously, being accepting of others is incredibly important if you're on a Federation exploration mission, but Pike takes this to heart. He always makes an effort to accommodate and appreciate cultural differences and differing experiences, something that is seen the most in his relationship to Spock. Beyond that, Chris is very personable. And, while everyone on the ship respects him and would never question his authority, they also tend to get along with him quite well. Pike is approachable, friendly, and sometimes even light-hearted. He's not afraid to let his crew see him in a capacity that isn't strictly a command role, and he wants to make sure that everyone in his charge feels like they could come to him if there was something that they needed.
COURTEOUS & BRAVE. Be polite to everyone and always use good manners. Face difficult situations even when you feel afraid. Do what you think is right despite what others might be doing or saying. Pike always operates from a position that respect is something that he has to earn from others, and so he treats them with as much respect and understanding. Chris also knows that respect for a leader is earned when that leader takes risks themselves, instead of sending others. Often, Chris's boots are the first to touch the ground when the Enterprise crew is entering a dangerous situation. As afraid as he is (and as terrible as his history in Security was) he knows that his crew will reflect his bravery, and he wants to do what he can to instil confidence in them even when he, himself, is afraid.
KIND. Treat others as you want to be treated. Never harm or kill any living thing without good reason. Chris has a lot of respect for others, and a lot of respect for life, in general. He will avoid conflict and lethal force whenever he can (something that would ultimately cost him greatly, were he the one to face that Romulan ship in the neutral zone). While he did make a name for himself during the Klingon War and was a respected leader during that conflict, he truly isn't a wartime Captain. He's not a pacifist and will use force if necessary, but he doesn’t like to throw around the power of the Federation or the Enterprise to make a point. His preference is always negotiation and finding common ground.
